On this Independence Day, I wanted to share one of my favorite sculptures, “Pledge Allegiance”1 Some references to the sculpture title it “Pledge of Allegiance” versus “Pledge Allegiance”, however most formal descriptions do not include an “of”. by Glenna Goodacre. Glenna Goodacre is probably best known for the Vietnam Women’s Memorial in Washington, however she was a prolific artist and designer, having also created one side of the Sacagawea dollar (2000), the Irish Memorial in Philadelphia, and numerous other acclaimed works.
There are a series of installations of “Pledge Allegiance”, including sculptures in Avon, CO; Holland, MI; Detroit, MI; Dallas, TX; Milwaukee, WI; Kirkland, WA; and Tampa, FL.
The sculpture features a series of children looking reverently at the American flag as another child raises it. The original cast was designed to be a gift for First Lady Barbara Bush in 1991.
